Conversations about Breastfeeding

Print version
03 August 2018

Komolakhon Rakhmanova, Monitoring and Evaluation Officer, UNICEF in Uzbekistan

The first week of August is devoted to informing the public throughout the world about the importance of breastfeeding. At the same time, the opinions in the society, among acquaintances, friends and doctors differ one from another. From the very first days of the child’s life, mothers get advice that is not entirely in best interest of the child.

I am a mother of three, and I breastfed all of them. For me, during that time, support and access to reliable information were key. After all, breastfeeding is not only about the mother and child health, but also about developing a strong emotional and psychological connection between the two of them.

Speaking of support to mothers, I mean the support of relatives and friends, employers, and the society in general. In the modern world, nursing mothers should be able to balance breastfeeding with study, work and an active lifestyle. It is very important that the society and employers ensure proper conditions, such as a shorter working day, a designated breastfeeding space, and support in the case of illness or when the child needs to be vaccinated.

In terms of access to reliable information, we can say that now this is not a big problem since a lot of information is available in the Internet. However, not everyone has the online access, and those who do must be very careful about the search and use of the available information.

Among other things, some health professionals, both at maternity hospitals and in polyclinics promote infant formula and early complimentary feeding. They are a living proof to the fact that a mother needs to be careful and make well-informed decisions in the best interest of her child.

Breastfeeding is a private matter for everyone, and, for various reasons, not every mother manages to breastfeed. However, it does not make you a worse of a mother, if you cannot breastfeed. Whichever way you choose to feed your child, depending on the circumstances, whether it is breast milk, infant formula or mixed feeding, the most important thing for your child is to eat well and receive all the care and love parents are able to give.
